Are We Overdoing It with CBD?

With the world opening up to cannabis and its extracts, CBD oil hyped up like no other supplement currently in the industry. You’ve probably seen it mentioned on your local news, your favorite Youtuber, and especially by Joe Rogan.

Of course, CBD is not a cure-all that overzealous marketers are making it seem. It is once of the many cannabinoids found in hemp or marijuana, and everyone has different levels of tolerance. Unless you have something that it can specifically treat, you may not need CBD at all. While the legalization of cannabis and its byproducts is a good thing, we still need to be well-informed consumers.

The Right Dosage

Since cannabidiol isn’t psychoactive like THC, it gives people the impression that it is harmless and healthy. While it is relative safe, it should be noted that the CBD dosage can affect how you react to it and how much benefits versus negative effects you feel.

A typical dosage may be 15 mg to 25 mg for an adult male. Of course, this will vary depending on where you source your CBD and adjusting accordingly to one’s tolerance level.

Just like most any other drug, vitamin, or medicine, you don’t want to take it in unlimited quantities. While there is no known fatalities from CBD overdose, undesirable side effects will be amplified.

Some of these side effects may include: dry mouth, insomnia, diarrhea & digestive issues, low blood pressure, and chronic lethargy.

There are also known interactions with some common prescription drugs. This can include some HIV antivirals, antihistamines (common for allergies), and benzodiazepines.

It’s Pricey

Compared to just smoking medical marijuana or hemp, CBD is actually pretty expensive for the average Joe. The is due to the currently demand since the market is so young and marketing is all over the place. It also has something to do with the fact that it’s a refined extract from a plant that’s been taboo for so long.

If you have minor issues that can be resolved with over-the-counter medicine or your current medical marijuana prescription, you might consider holding off ordering multiple vials of CBD. If you are running out of options and you have concrete evidence CBD works for you, by all means give it a try.

And since the CBD market is still in chaos, there are predatory marketers creating products with implied or uncertain dosages to squeeze out extra profit. This may include novelty drinks, food items, or products advertised to contain “hemp seed extract” without actual numbers provided.

It’s Still Amazing

While this article has been full of skepticism, the usage of CBD and other cannabinoids is still amazing for the right people. In fact, I’ve tried it myself and found some progress with managing my depression, in which you can read about a study here.

The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD is also helping so many people with pain management, and especially those with Rheumatoid arthritis. According to this study, it also protects the nerves from further damage.

There are even more studies in the works that may very well cement CBD into mainstream medical treatments, rather than being a trendy item on Amazon.

Wrapping Up

As the market settles, CBD will likely become more accessible to people all over the world (where its legal). This is where more data will come to light on how beneficial (or dangerous) this substance may be, and we can have assurance on how it should be applied for medical uses. Until then, if you have the pocket change to experiment, sticking to reasonable doses don’t eschew standard medicine in favor of this cannabinoid.
